Modal Indeterminacy And Semantic Roles In Turkish

Summary/Abstract: This study aims at describing the disambiguation of modal meanings in terms of the semantic roles assigned. The basic claim of this work is that the morpheme -mAlI is polysemious in the deontic domain when there is an agent as the subject that one can impose an action. There are two deontic interpretations with agent subjects: Obligation and suggestion. However, the morpheme -mAlI becomes monosemious with ‘obligation’ when there is an indirect subject. This morpheme becomes ambigious between deontic and epistemic interpretations when it is attached to complex and nominal predicates with the verb ‘ol’. The meaning is disambiguated in relation to the semantic role assigned to the subject. The deontic interpretation is forced when the subject is assigned to ‘patient role’.
