Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to evaluate the degree of Poland’s fulfillment of nominal convergence criteria placed in the Maastricht Treaty. Moreover, this study investigates the problem of the real convergence of the Polish economy with the euro area. These issues are important because of the perspective of full participation in the Economic and Monetary Union and the ability to maximize the benefits of monetary integration. Additionally, this article presents the most important benefits of joining the euro area and the risks connected with resignation of domestic currency. The analysis shows that the nominal convergence criteria do not constitute for Poland a barrier preventing accession to the monetary union. However, the level of structural similarity of the Polish economy to the euro area (real convergence) is still unsatisfactory.
