Summary/Abstract: This is a contrastive study in the Czech and Bulgarian substandard vocabulary, based on the data given in the Small Czech-Bulgarian Dictionary (Sofia 2011). This two-language dictionary is built on the binary semiotic oppositions of three kinds, namely: the expressiveness vs. non-expressiveness within the Czech lexicon, the expressiveness vs. non-expressiveness within the Bulgarian lexicon, and the inter-language expressiveness vs. non-expressiveness. Neither of the three oppositions has clear-cut boundaries, and each of them displays specific features of its own, as is richly attested on examples.
