Summary/Abstract: Romania joined the European Union with an important human capital of 21.5 million inhabitants (being the 7th country in size in the UE at the moment of its adherence in 2007). Nevertheless, it goes through a process of great demographic changes. On a long-term, the outcomes of this process are worrying. The continuous trend of population decrease that started in 1992, will also continue in the future and the evolution of its population’s structure on age groups, correlated with the evolution of birth rate, death rate and migration, highlight a powerful trend towards demographic ageing and a high level of social dependence. In this paper we aim at making an analysis of the demographic situation of Romania in the European context, as well as the future trends of evolution of the demographic behaviour of the Romanian population.
