Summary/Abstract: The beginnings of modern sport go back to the 18th century. The taking of regular physical exercise in some form was common, of course, in all ages. In medieval and early modern Europe, for example, the sons of princely and aristocratic families were expected to undergo training to acquire facility in horsemanship, in hunting and in the handling of weapons; they would wrestle or otherwise pit themselves against one another at running or possibly swimming. All this was part of the traditional instruction given to members of all political and military élites, being more or less indispensable for their calling.[...]
