Summary/Abstract: Political rituals and ceremonies are defined in the frame of communication studies and then theoretically explored in semiotic perspective. The author analyses specific nature of representation of reality by its symbolic substitutes, and characteristics and functions of symbolic systems that participate in the construction of meaning. The question of interpretation of the messages communicated in political ritual and ceremonies, as a possible path toward understanding of their effects, is approached in the framework of presentational and discoursive symbols as theoretised by Susanne Langer
