Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper is digital television as well as the reasons of its development, its function, characteristics, possibilities and perspectives in the newly created circumstances of the computerized society. That is a type of television which, due to the new technology, has succeeded in converting audio and video signals into digital data enabling that way a completely new method of recording, editing and broadcasting of audio-visual contents. The major question that is being discussed herein is the appearance and functioning of digital television as a new kind of multimedia, and does it, as such, can take and keep precedence in the field of informing, as well as can it meet the need of the computerized society for more and more information. The digital television has become reality. The new technology, already accepted worldwide, but not widely applied, is the future of broadcasting. Does it also mean its further existence in the multimedia environment, it will primarily depend upon an adequate exploitation of the capacities and possibilities that it offers. In order that the digital television should come to life in practice, it is necessary that broadcasting units work according to the defined standards, but it is also necessary that users be familiar with the characteristics of the “new” television, so that they could use it properly. The results of numerous researches exactly points to the problem of accepting new technologies as the biggest stumbling block when the implementation of new systems is in question. The technical characteristics of the digital system applied in the field of transmitting audio-visual contents enable far greater possibilities than the previous analogue system. This refers not only to the broadcasting of television contents, but to their preparation and production, i.e. their preproduction, production and postproduction, too. Respecting the opinion of those who deal exclusively with television signal emitting problems, and in compliance with that consider that the digital television solely implies that part of the process in the digitalization of television, yet a very important contribution of introducing digital technology into the complete system of production of audio-visual broadcast, which has been proven by experience so far, will not be excluded from this research work.
