Summary/Abstract: The Orthodox Church Dictionary of Petr Alekseyev was published four times in years 1773–1819. The last revised and enlarged edition of the six volume dictionary came out of press in 1817–1819. The author did not include all the lexical resources of the XVII century Russian but made selection of words “difficult to understand” (religious terms, Church slavonisms, personal names, names of holidays, rituals, borrowings, old grammatical forms, phraseologic forms, and abbreviations) which were used in the Holy Scriptures, in religious texts, etc. Each of 6000 entries was illustrated with quotations, examples of usage, and its source was specified at the same time. The work of Peter Alekseyev contributed to the development of Russian lexicography, and to the development of Russian culture of the XVIII century. This dictionary was used and included in the first six volume normative dictionary of the Russian language prepared by the Russian Academy (Dictionary of Russian Academy, 1789–1794).
