Summary/Abstract: When in 1956 Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer began working on urban plans of a new capital cityin the middle of Brazil, Brasilia was a modest town with 140 thousand inhabitants. Now, this cityis the fourth biggest metropolis of Brazil. Is life in Brasilia comfortable and friendly for inhabitantstoday? Is it true, that only ministries and government agencies work well in Brasilia? What impacthave Niemeyer’s buildings on people life? Can it be assumed, that for thousands of incomers fromall over Brazil coming to the city for work and a better life, spectacular buildings designed by Niemeyerhave no meaning? Is this unique experiment, from the perspective of 60 years successful? Is the process of this experiment over? How we can watch the city, where the main architect isgone and another of his buildings are still constructed? What consequences can expect the city which was provided for half a million habitants and now there are nearly 3 million citizens? Whyare there so many controversies of researchers about Brasilia? Or maybe it is impossible to answerabove questions yet? Maybe we should wait another 60 years to find the answers? Despite many objections to the proposed solutions, we can assume, that Brasilia’s Plano Piloto can be a great inspiration and example for future generations of urban planners and architects.
