Summary/Abstract: A short survey of the Sabbath in the Old Testament, early Jewish inter pretation, and the New Testament can show that the original sabbath (full moon) and the seventh day (without work) are not connected until the Decalogue (Ex 20:10 and Deut 5:14). The former social motivation of the seventh day (Ex 34:21) has been replaced later by a theological argument concerning creation (Ex 20:11). The early rabbinic tradition enumerated anxiously all activities forbidden on the Sabbath. Even if lifesaving has always been allowed on the Sabbath, there existed many different views. Jesus healed on the Sabbath, also those people who were not in danger to die immediately. “The Sabbath was made for the sake of man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mk 2:27).
