Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the ambiguous Old Czech lexeme smiechoval/směchoval. It examines its context, textual variants and relationship to the Latin original and compares the different ways it has been addressed in historical dictionaries. Based on word-formational, syntactic and semantic relationships, the lexeme is interpreted as a substantive compound meaning ‘jester, joker’.
