Summary/Abstract: The study aims to explore the life of motorists between 1920 and 1960, as reflected in the political history of Hungary and gives and interpretation of the inner transformations of the motorists’ subculture, through the change of number of them and the social composition of the car owners. Author compares the discourses of politics with the arrangements that affected the motorists’ life directly in five periods: the Horthy–period (1920–1938); War period (1939–1945); the short, three year period of 1945–1948, when motorists had to face blackmarket situations; the period of Stalinist dictatorship and the shortage of goods (1948–1956); and the early Kádár-period with a new model of socialist consumption (1956–1960).
