Summary/Abstract: In the past decade, insurance companies have been increasingly exposed to a large number of risks coming from the business environment. Natural disasters and accidents caused by the human factors have resulted in large-scale material damage to property, all of which has a negative impact not only on the business results and insurers’ capital but also on the country’s overall economic development. The negative trends in the financial markets yield substantial losses and significantly reduce incomes from the insurance companies’ investments. Hence, this article deals with the risks which put business entities and individuals in danger and which may have a negative impact on the economic development of the country. The aim of the research is to point out to the possible methods of effective risk management, primarily through the institute of insurance, which may prevent and mitigate the negative consequences on the economic development of the country, the safety of insurers’ operations and the financial position of the insured policy-holders.
