Summary/Abstract: Renewable energy must continue to play a key role in the transition to a competitive, safe and sustainable energy system.This transition will not be possible without a much higher share of renewable energy. As far as renewable energy is generated withinthe EU, it can also reduce the EU's trade deficit in energy products, and its exposure to supply disruptions and price volatility of fossilfuels. Also, renewable energy sources have the potential to stimulate the development of innovative technologies, to create jobs inemerging sectors and to reduce air pollution. Sustainable development is seen as pertaining primarily to environmental issues andgrassroots social development, while the information society is perceived as being more relevant to the economic developmentpotential of urban elites (Willard and Halder, 2003).
