Summary/Abstract: The evolutionary approach is a contemporary psychological concept, explaining human artistic activity. The article presents selected evolutionary theories referring to cognitive, emotional and social conditions, which are the fundamental basis of esthetical experience and the creation and reception of art. Additionally, two evolutionary explanations of the art phenomena are presented: the concept of functional meaning and the concept of side effects. The final part of the article contains information about other evolutionary issues and concepts related to the psychology of art.
