Summary/Abstract: Quantitative social research paradigms limit not only the scope of alternative research questions but also that of the alternative methods. In other words, although we rarely reflect on this, the choice of statistical tools is not only a technical issue. Similarly rarely mentioned aspect is that the statistical tool itself may affect the science it serves, in terms of approaches, concepts and research questions. In my paper I try to support these positions by giving examples concerning Bourdieu’s correspondence analysis, the paradigms of mobility research, the applications of Big Data in social sciences and the diffusion of methodological innovations.
