Summary/Abstract: This paper contains a review of two articles by Mattei Dogan, which focus on the Romanian political system during the inter-war period. The first article – The Electoral Dance in Inter-war Romania (1987) - is a thoroughly documented analysis of what M. Dogan calls the “mimed democracy” that has characterized our political life between 1919 and 1937. The second article - The Reversed Pyramid. The Social Origins of Romanian Members of Parliament from a Comparative Perspective (1990) - explores the social-economic structure of the parliament and of the major political parties. Using some of the frameworks of analysis outlined in the two articles, this paper also examines briefly the political system in contemporary Romania. Furthermore, it points out the similarities and differences between the inter-war and post-totalitarian periods.
