Summary/Abstract: In his book In the Name Of Identity, Amin Maalouf states that language is one of the segments that most powerfully constitute human identity, while Azade Seyhan in Writing Outside the Nation underlines that the relation between subject and language is challenged when experienced in exile or displacement. This paper analyzes language as a motif in the novels Museum Of Unconditional Surrender and Ministry Of Pain by Dubravka Ugrešić. Special focus is placed on the relations that form between the characters of these novels who live in exile (or are displaced) with the language of their homeland, particularly how that relation influences their sense of belonging and identity.
