An Outline of Slovak and Polish language relations (on phonetical basis)

Summary/Abstract: On the comparison of Polish and Slovak phonetics, the author assumes that Slovak has preserved the rich original Slavic vowel system better and in fuller extent than Polish, though original consonantal system of Slovak in comparison with Polish has largely reduced. According to the sounds rate, Polish is more consonantal than Slovak, mostly because of striking softs, which cause markedly greater opposition between more backward-created and more open sounds in Polish than in Slovak. The charakteristic feature of Slovak (on the background of Polish) is the occurence of considerably frequent long vowels and diphtongs; there are no such sounds in Polish, that is the reason why Polish has its staccato character. For the phonetical differencies between Slovak and Polish, it is not the presence or absence of certain phenomena which is typical, but more often it is the difference in distribution of indivídual cases of a certain phenomena, known in both languagcs, for example the distribution rate of vowels and consonants in a text, of open and closed syllables, of occlusive and constrictive consonants, of different occurence of more backward-created consonants, etc. The characteristic features of Polish (on the background of Slovak) are soft s, i. é, di, more backward y, and nasals; characteristic features of Slovak are long vowels, diphtongs, syllabic r, l and the consonant h. (Here also the Polish l and in Slovak explicit pronounciation demanded ä can be considerated.)
