Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationships between the place of the individual in the social hierarchy and their relationship to the national idea. Theoretical basis is Zygmunt Bauman's thesis on the division of the modern world for “tourists” and “vagabonds”. We follow these two groups since pre-modern history till today. We look at their ideological competitors: citizens and nationalists. The conclusion is the necessity to introduce an additional category – “tripper”, and also instability of the main division in modern culture of consumption (tourist – vagabond – tripper) as well as the possibility of return of the old identities (nationalist – citizen).
