Summary/Abstract: One should not be deceived: German democracy is still a highly precarious and problematic issue, as far as its rootedness in the broad mass of the people is concerned. What makes it particularly difficult to understand the democratic way of life for Germans is their deep-rooted aversion to parliaments and political parties. There is still a strong anti-parliamentary and party-like affect in Germany today (1950s). This mood is by no means confined to the broad class of politically uneducated and uninterested. It extends far into the thin, politically active intellectual leadership layer. It is predominant among young people and especially in the academic youth
