Summary/Abstract: India became independent on August 15, 1947. Thus it is that one of the oldest peoples of the world lives in one of the youngest states, and the question arises as how the old spirit is going to adapt to the young form. A three-week visit is not enough to give an exhaustive answer. Nevertheless, some ob-servations may be given.
