Summary/Abstract: With this presentation of the fourth critical phase in the foreign policy of the Hitler empire, Joachim G. Leithäuser's essay on the diplomatic pre-history of the Second World War comes to an end. Beginning with the Austrian crisis (issue 48), it shows the inner automatism, which must necessarily lead to the tragedy of 1949 through Munich (Issue 49) and Prague (Issue 50). In spite of careful study of the sources available, especially the "Files on German Foreign Policy," the author was not so much interested in the elucidation of individual diplomatic processes, but rather in the visualization of the essential, the spirit, or the perverted spirit, which delivered an entire continent to the catastrophe.
