Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the relation between violence and ethnocentrism, starting from the view shared by many authors that there is no ethnonationalism without violence. Every ethnonationalist movement gives rise to violence: militancy underlies ethnonationalism. Examining this view through the filter of various psychological and anthropological theories, of which psychoanalysis occupies a privileged place, the author comes to the conclusion that ethnonationalism is not the only source of aggressivity in man. We are aggressive because in us there is not only creative but also destructive potential. Then again, we are aggressive whenever, and for whatever reason, the group to which we belong is in danger. Finally, we are aggressive because we have learned that by using aggressivity and aggression we can often achieve what we want.
