Summary/Abstract: If literature testifies to something important entering the community, it does this through a device that brings heteronomy into the self. This is a point which links literature with democracy: they both introduce the existence of a being without body, of a being made up from words which do not correspond to any bodies, do not have the features of exchangeable things nor participate in the conventions of exchange. In the very heart of this peculiar existence there is this feature of heteronomy which separates every selfhood from itself. Literature is not concerned with power but with consensus. It breaks consensus and makes “I” of agreements, conventions and contracts inherently imbued with “he”. This mark of heteronomy is but a mark of equality, of the equality that penetrates imperceptibly through community, because it is the bodies in a community that it dislocates from their proper realm and being.
