Summary/Abstract: The XVII regular session of the General Assembly of the United Nations was held in New York from September 18 to December 20, 1962. There were 96 items on the agenda of the session. Speaking in the general debate, on September 24, 1962, Vladimir Popović, head of the Yugoslav delegation and member of the Federal Executive Council, gave a survey of the situation and conditions in which the XVII session had begun its work. After having enumerated the positive changes that had taken place between the XVI and XVII session (solutions in Algeria, Laos, West Irian; disarmament talks in Geneva; exchange of letters between the President of the United States and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the establishment of international co-operation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space; the emergence of a number of new states; the holding of the Cairo Conference on Problems of Economic Development), Vladimir Popović stated: »All these positive tendencies and the results achieved confirm the fact that the policy of active and peaceful coexistence, which is so resolutely supported by the non-aligned countries, and which found such powerful expression at the Belgrade Conference last year, is making further progress and acquiring a place and role of growing importance in international relations. At the same time, the policy of coexistence carries into effect the spirit and principles of the Charter, leading thereby to the strengthening of our Organization and of its role in world affairs.«
