Summary/Abstract: The interwar system of employing professors at academic schools was based on a limited numberof professorial chairs created by the state authorities. The aim of this study is to examine thesystem itself and its functioning with relation to pedagogy chairs. They were divided intoassociate chairs (where associate professors were employed) and, more prestigious, full chairsfor full professors. The main rules for their employment were formulated in the laws on academicschools. The number of pedagogy chairs created by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and PublicEducation was very small. This concerned other disciplines as well. Due to the limited numberof chairs, the manner of election raised a lot of controversy. The following factors influenced thedecision to entrust a chair to a particular professor: opinions collected from professors aboutthe most suitable candidates, academic achievements, possession of habilitation, and often theinfluence of well-known professors who promoted their own co-workers.
