Summary/Abstract: From the second half of the 1950s, quite a different era in the history of Estonian landscape architecture began. Political thaw following Stalin’s death permitted a more creative attitude both in architecture and landscape architecture. Condemnation of excess ornamentation, the emergence of new building construction and usage of free planning in new residential districts proceeded simultaneously with similar changes in developing the green belts. Only now was it possible to use new design methods based on Western models. Before, this had been hindered by the rigidly determined official art and culture policies that disrupted the natural development of culture after World War II.
