Summary/Abstract: In this article, I offer an overview of anthropological theories on alcohol consumption in 20th century. Alcohol studies, and, later on, drinking practices, are one of those phenomena that are hard to tacle from the point of humanities as well as from the social-constructivist angle, being somewhat on that fine line between ‘nature’ and ‘culture’. This has caused a theoretical regression and has created an impact upon perceiving drinking as „less cultural” in comparison to other, „more cultural” social phenomena. The author offers critical insight into limitations and contributions of most prominent theories, with a special emphasis on theoretical-methodological shift in the sixth decade of the last century. At the end, the author offers a proposal for the anthropology of alcohol in local, Serbian, socio-cultural contexts.
