Summary/Abstract: The year 2016, despite the Kremlin’s previous fears, ended well for it. Oil prices rose slightly and the Russian economy, despite Western sanctions, has slowly begun to come out of recession. The Panama papers and doping scandals failed to weaken President Putin’s popularity. The parliamentary election did not cause destabilization, but demonstrated a clear victory for the ruling camp and defeat of the weak opposition. Contrary to the Kremlin’s earlier fears of growing confrontation with the US, the Presidential election in this country was won, much to Moscow’s delight, by Donald Trump, whom Russia could see as a potential partner for a geopolitical bargain. Weakening European Union tried to find a modus vivendi with Moscow, including in the energy sphere. As a result of these events, and despite bleak long-term prospects, the confidence of the Russian authorities increased, which was evident in its foreign policy.
