Summary/Abstract: Prague and Krakow are European metropolises that were already capital cities since the Middle Ages; the presence of sovereign courts significantly formed the character of both centres and influenced their economic and cultural development. Krakow, which had been a sovereign seat continously from the eleventh century until 1609 when the royal residence was transformed to Warsaw, over time became one of the largest eastern European metropolises, with a population of 34,000-37,000 at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
