Transactional passivity as a barrier to educational change

Summary/Abstract: Passivity can be treated as one of the essential causes inhibit the positive changes in the process of education. Particular psychological schools took various approaches to the phenomenon of social passivity. The author presents the psychoanalytic point of view resulting from behaviorism, cognitive theories, humanistic psychology and the system approach. However, in the transactional analysis the source of passivity are in devalorizations and the lack of support on teacher’s part. The student who has the feeling that his need of being noticed is not perceived adopts the following strategies of passivity: resignation, adjustment, stimulation, numbness or explosion (acting – out). The family and home situation of the student as well as his personality traits contribute to the adoption of passive attitude. In the article the author formulated advice for teachers on how to act with passive student.
