Summary/Abstract: Te article is devoted to the emergence and development of three closely related narrative phenomena: counterfactuality within professional history writing, alternative histories (hypothetical or based on supposition) within popular history as well as based on alternative history novels – as an element of belles lettres. Origins of these three narrative modes based on a speculative way of thinking are located by the author in the 17th century tradition: she begins her analysis from Leibniz's Theodicy, then she point to their historical transformations in 19th and 20th centuries, to finish with an attempt at interpretation of the causes leading to quite a significant growth of popularity of this type of narratives at the turn of the 20th century.
