Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the Inner Dimensions (1983), an installation by Vladimir Ivanov and the photo series A Self-portrait as… (1989) by Tsvetan Krustev. Ivanov’s artwork is a triptych of photographs and a text with incorporated selfportrait photos taken by using different angles. Inner Dimensions communicates the idea of self-absorption and spiritual ascesis related to the artist’s interest in Eastern philosophies. Krustev in his series of self-portraits ridiculed and parodied the conventional notion of such feasts as Christmas (A Self-portrait as Winter), of the myth of holidaying in a tropical paradise (A Self-portrait as Summer), the beginning of new life (A Self-portrait as Spring) or the trade of the artist (A Selfportrait as Autumn). The artworks under consideration by two Varna-based artists are an example of how the traditional subject matters and genres (self-portrait) are updated in post-modern art.
