Summary/Abstract: Although the Dublin-born authors Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde treated one another with courtesy and praised each other’s works, their views on the purpose of literary art differed significantly. The paper gives an overview of these opposing stands as presented in some of their most acclaimed critical essays and literary works.
