Strange traveller : (about the ethical position of N.S. Leskov)

Summary/Abstract: This article examines Leskov's ethical position, caused by the peculiarities influencing the formation of his worldview. It emphasizes the autonomy of the writer in understanding of events he witnessed and which were reflected in his works. The article presents the literary-critical assessment of Leskov's contemporaries, representing attempts of critics to understand the writer's works, determine his place and role in literature and based primarily on their social and political beliefs. This is determined by the content of their judgments, often one-sided and biased. The validity of L. N. Tolstoy's statements about Leskov was justified. Tolstoy saw in the writer "type of Christian idealist".
