The Role of Intellectual Property Rights Under the Concept of Open Innovation

Summary/Abstract: In this article, the importance of intellectual property rights in innovation-orientedcooperation between enterprises and external entities was shown. The attention was paid tothe evolution of the function of such legal instruments as patents, which cease to be solelya tool of protection against imitation, becoming an important instrument of technologytransfer and mechanism for coordinating inter-organizational cooperation. This situationposes a major challenge for managers, which are required to increasingly higher level ofcompetencies in the intellectual property management.
