Changes in Consumers’ Preferences in the Market for Ice Cream

Summary/Abstract: In order to analyse consumers’ preferences and the market for ice cream in Poland, there were carried out surveys as well as used research findings of other authors on the market for ice cream in Poland. To assess changes the author compared surveys findings obtained in the years 2008 and 2013. Consumers still prefer the same flavours of ice cream, though there have recently occurred minor changes in these preferences. This primarily concerns the growth of popularity of sorbets, particularly in the summer season. Still the most popular is ice cream of the creamy, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavours. The market of ice cream in Poland has been developing pretty slowly what is caused by season consumption of ice cream and low per capita consumption thereof. Despite that it has still had quite considerable potential. Awareness of consumers’ preferences and changes thereof is extremely important for ice cream manufacturers. They affect the profile of their production and thus enrichment of the offer that is to encourage consumers to consume more, especially beyond the summer season. They achieve it by way of introduction to the market of smaller packaging of family ice cream, development of new flavours of ice cream as well as through development of chains of ice-cream shops/cafes. Cafes operating by the franchise principle all the year round quite often are located at shopping centres, what may help to reduce seasonality of ice cream consumption. The dominating manufacturer of ice cream in the Polish market is concern Unilever manufacturing in Poland ice cream under the brand Algida. The article is of the research nature.
