It is a known fact that a lyric poem is a speech creation expressing various feelings and moods, but also that the shaping of its lyric text has been reached at gradually. Lyric poems are thematically rather uneven, most often inspired by certain life circumstances, and they exist in all Croatian dialects. The people of Vela Luka, aware of the importance of oral literature, keep their popular poem. Well known are many old “folk” poets. The poem used to echo at work, at parties and fishing, while the most favorite poems speak of boys and girls, and their fault and virtues. The locals of Vela Luka used to sing, and are known for their poetry handed down from generation to generation. Usually poems of different content were sung to a music tune. Of course, no tune has been preserved in its original form, but was changed and reshaped through tradition. Before the appearance of recorders of traditional melodies, every poem was handed down through oral tradition, which made it subject to various changes, but even the recording failed to solve the problem of preserving the original text.
