Summary/Abstract: Sustaining the environment and managing its resources in accordance with the principle of sustainable development is one of many aspects of environmental protection. It is the responsibility of the public authorities, and its effectiveness will depend on the use of coercion towards legal entities and the awareness of the importance of environmentally friendly actions.Public authorities are required to: prevent adverse health effects of environmental degradation, pursue policies that ensure ecological safety for modern and future generations, provide information on the state and the environment, support citizens' actions for the protection and improvement of the environment.Spatial planning and sustainable development have been adopted as the basis for shaping spatial policy, defining the scope and ways of dealing with issues related to the allocation of land for specific purposes and establishing the principles of their management. Moreover, they are the basis for drawing up and updating the concept of spatial development of the country, the development strategy of voivodeships, spatial development plans of voivodeships, studies of conditions and directions of spatial development of municipalities and local spatial development plans. In particular, these actions should include: identifying the solutions needed to prevent pollution, ensuring protection from emerging pollutants and restoring the environment to the right condition and setting the conditions for the implementation of projects that will achieve optimum environmental performance.
