Summary/Abstract: As part of the fundamental political and structural changes in the system of inter national relations in Europe in 1989–2001, the previous foreign policies pursued by Poland and by the Federal Republic of Germany also came up for review. A stable, bipolar inter national pattern, based on mutual deterrence by the Soviet Union and the United States, has been replaced with a new structure, asymmetrical and multipolar.
