Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at questioning the crisis of the relationship between man and environment at the dawn of Industrial Age. In order to do that, we are going to comment Clara (1810-11), Schelling’s unfinished novel. The link between nature and spirit is the subject of this still relatively unexplored text. The link is even more problematic in the text, because it is not only the result of a historical evolution. An internal crisis of Schelling’s Identity system comes in addition to the first one. At last, an existential crisis (the loss of Schelling’s wife at the time of writing) is also transparent in the text. It increases the power of the questioning, which is from now on a melancholic one, and not so far from aporia.
