Summary/Abstract: Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady in Spiš had earned an important place in Spiš history. Its impact on the surroundings can be monitored in a variety of cultural expressions: colonization activity, system of monastic economy, dominion administration and defence, building the parish network, impact on spiritual sphere and art, etc. Perhaps the least explored issue is the defence system against attackers. This is related to possession and use of the nearby Marcel’s Castle.
