Summary/Abstract: An aim of this study was to examine the dynamics of changes in the amount and type of astaxanthin dietary supplements available in the Polish pharmacy market in the years 2010-2012. In addition, in 2012, there was examined the nutritional awareness of a selected group of young people aged 20-25 years of astaxanthin. In order to determine the amount and type of astaxanthin dietary supplements available in the market, there were surveyed 70 Polish Internet pharmacies. Data were collected every year in the same Internet pharmacies. The analysis of the data shows that the number of supplements with astaxanthin is steadily growing. In 2010, there were 13 supplements with astaxanthin in the market, in 2011, by six more (19 supplements), while in 2012 already 23. Most supplements available with astaxanthin were dedicated to people with cardiovascular diseases what may be related to strong antioxidant properties of the carotenoid. Prices of the supplements varied and ranged from 18 to 164 zlotys for 60 capsules, which usually amounted to around 100 zlotys per pack. The prices of the same supplements over the period showed an upward trend. In 2012, there was a relative price increase against 2011 by over ten per cent. Despite an increase in the number of astaxanthin dietary supplements in the Polish pharmacy market, the awareness of young people of it still remains relatively low.
