Jamaican Creole as a Marker of Hybridity and Postcolonial Identity in Derek Walcott

Summary/Abstract: A particular feature distinguishing Caribbean writers from other postcolonial artists is their language usage. Most of these writers widely use Jamaican Creole to express their cultural resistance to the hegemonic power. In the following, I will refer to the way Jamaican Creole, as a language variety, functions both as a bridge between cultures and as a marker of postcolonial identity in Derek Walcott´s most significant poetry and drama.
