Summary/Abstract: Once in a monastery, every novice gets an older monk or a nun, a scholar, as a teacher and mentor, whom he or she has to follow and obey. They spend most of the time together in prayer, learning or researching. The magister becomes for the novice a rough model. This article follows the footsteps of such relationships in some of the masterpieces of the European literature.
