Summary/Abstract: This article aims to provide an overview of the evolution of the concept of sustainable development and a comparison of the selected characteristics of the sustainable development strategy of new EU countries. This paper presents trends and lines of research in the field of sustainable development. This is followed by a qualitative analysis of the National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) or equivalent documents endorsed by every new EU country. These strategies could play a key role in coordinating policies and actions at different levels of cross-governance. The article draws attention to the year of creation or update of NSDS of a given country, shows the key areas of monitored indicators and identifies who is responsible for creating and implementing the strategy. The analysis of the available evidence shows that the national approach to sustainable development is very diverse and a statement of an existence of a coherent policy in the field of sustainable development is premature.
