Summary/Abstract: Offshore wind farms have a great potential to improve not only the European economy and create new workplaces but also they constitute a crucial determinant of economic development in the regions. The EU uses advanced knowledge and competence regarding marine technologies as well as experience as a market leader. If Poland wants to take advantage of offshore wind farms it is necessary to create competitive economic and legal conditions to provide appropriate profitability of the investment as well as stability and predictability of regulations. The result is an effective use of the potential of offshore wind energy which leads to development of coastal regions. Offshore wind farms may affect the environment in a different way. Hence, an aim of considerations is an attempt to assess the impact of offshore wind farms on the environment and to indicate the need to define the indices describing changes for the benefit of sustainable development in this respect.
