Summary/Abstract: The establishment of a European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) is an idea brought for the first time about 20 years ago by academics in the study “Corpus Juris, Introducing Penal provisions for the purpose of the financial interests of the European Union”. This idea became soon an objective of the European Union. The European Commission launched already in 2001 a Green Paper on the European Public Prosecutor and this objective was later included in the EU primary legislation with the provisions of Article 86 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. This editorial grounds on this historical background and focuses on the main provisions of the proposal for a Regulation of the Council implementing enhanced cooperation establishing the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. Moreover, it briefly analyses the impact of the EPPO Regulation on the domestic legislative and institutional framework. It also comments on the main challenges and opportunities raised by the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
