Summary/Abstract: The article intends to support the idea that the late Merleau-Ponty’s turn towards Naturphilosophie indicates a significant influence of Schelling’s philosophy for his own project of „indirect ontology“ as chair du monde phenomenology. R. Bech’s and C. Vallier’s claims in this respect are supported by a comparison of the ontological implications of Merleau-Ponty’s concept of la chair du monde and of Schelling’s barbarische Prinzip. Also, there is in both authors a parallel development of λόγος in their criticisms of the primacy of ratio. On the one hand, such juxtaposition reveals a genetic link between Schelling’s and late Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of nature; on the other hand, it also opens the opportunity to once again raise the question of methodological presuppositions and limits of phenomenological inquiry in the context of increasing relevance of Naturphilosophie.
